Dark Chocolate Demise (Cupcake Bakery Mystery, #7)

The New York Times bestselling Cupcake Bakery Mysteries bake up sweet surprises, but as the series continues, Mel and Angie are in for a fresh batch of trouble…

Scottsdale, Arizona, may not be the liveliest place on earth, but it’s never been as dead as this. Hundreds of fans have gathered together for the first annual Old Town Zombie Walk, and Mel, Angie, and the Fairy Tale Cupcake crew are donning their best undead attire to sell some horror-themed desserts to the hungry hordes.

But the fun turns to fright when Mel finds a real dead body in a prop casket outside of the bakery’s truck—and the corpse looks alarmingly like a zombie of their own. Knowing that Joe, Angie’s brother and Mel’s former flame, has been working on a dangerous mob case, Mel worries that the murder is a hit gone wrong and that someone near and dear was the real target. To keep any of her friends from winding up six feet under, Mel will do whatever it takes to find a killer—no matter how scary things get...

Jenn McKinlay just keeps getting better and better. I love this series. Mel is a fantastic main character and all of her friends are endearing. This book starts at a Zombie Walk and is packed with action from beginning to end. I can't wait to see what happens next.

The Ghost and Mrs. Mewer-Krista Davis

The Ghost and Mrs. Mewer (Paws and Claws Mystery #2)

Wagtail, Virginia, the top pet-friendly getaway in the United States, is gearing up for a howling good Halloween—until a spooky murder shakes the town to its core . . .

Holly Miller doesn’t believe in spirits, but the Sugar Maple Inn is filled with guests who do. The TV series in development, Apparition Apprehenders, has descended on Wagtail’s annual Halloween festivities to investigate supernatural local legends, and Holly has her hands full showing the ghost hunters a scary-fun time.

But the frights turn real when Holly’s Jack Russell, Trixie, and kitten, Twinkletoes, find a young woman drowned in the Wagtail Springs Hotel’s bathhouse—the spot of the town’s most infamous haunting. The crime scene is eerily similar to the creepy legend, convincing Holly that the death wasn’t just accidental. Now she’ll have to race to catch a flesh-and-blood killer—before someone else in town gives up the ghost .

Krista Davis has knocked it out of the park with this book. It is a great second book in this series. Holly is an endearing character as is everyone else. I hope that there are many more in this series to come.

The Romanovs-Virginia Cowles

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I had no idea this book was originally published in 1971. I really like it. It had a great deal of history about the Romanovs and I have always found them to be an interesting family. This is the perfect book for any history lover.

Glorious Apollo-E. Barrington

Glorious Apollo: A Novel of Lord Byron

“Mad, bad and dangerous to know…”

Caroline Lamb’s fatal description would follow Byron to his grave.

He might have been among the greatest of English poets. But the bad luck of the Byron's had plagued him from birth.

The son of Mad Jack Byron whose wild escapades were the talk of the town, and Miss Gordon of Gight, a Scotch heiress whose wretched marriage with Mad Jack worked her up to fever of rage and grief, he had had many bitter moments of poverty and slight in his young life.

With his beauty, intelligence and peerage, he had the chance repair his broken fortune by picking and choosing among the wealthiest women in England.

But Byron was his own worst enemy…

After the neglect and abuse he received at the hands of his mother, he vowed to make the female sex pay for their treatment of him.

And with his laughing eyes, moody pallor, and aloof nature, he soon had women, from all social classes, falling at his feet.

As his literary reputation grew, so did his reputation as a rake.

But when doors start slamming in his face, he decides he needs to settle down.

Enchanted by the modest and quietly intelligent Annabella Millbanke, he asks for her hand in marriage.

But it isn’t long before his eyes start to wander once again…

And before long, not only rumours of other lovers, but even of incest are plaguing their marriage…

As Byron hurtles down a path of self-destruction, he is set to lose everything he ever cared about…

‘Glorious Apollo’ is a thrilling classic tale of the life and loves of Lord Byron.

E Barrington is a pseudonym of Elizabeth Louisa Moresby (1862 – 3 January 1931), a British-born novelist who became the first prolific, female fantasy writer in Canada. Her other historical novels include ‘Glorious Apollo: The Life of Lord Byron’, ‘Queen of Hearts: A Novel of Marie Antoinette’ and ‘The Laughing Queen: A Novel of Cleopatra’.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. This was a great story. Lord Byron was, by far, his own worst enemy. This book tells the story of how he came to be such a complicated man and the destruction that came from it. I loved it.

Haunted Summer-Anne Edwards

We lighted candles in the midnight dark. Lord Byron led us single file down the dank stone stairs into the deserted dungeon of the Castle of Chillon. Like some crawling serpent with flaming eyes, our five shadowy figures shuffled along the cold stones. "Sit down," Byron commanded. "Everyone touch hands." I was frightened and I knew why. This dungeon was to represent the secret cell within ourselves where all our private haunting took place.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I have to say that I'm not sure how I felt about this book. The Gothic feel of it was great. That said, I'm not sure how I felt about the story itself. While it was interesting it did drag at times. Over all a good book.

Sweeney Todd and The String of Pearls-Thomas Peckett Prest, James Malcolm Rymer, and Dick Collins

A distraught Johanna Oakley wanders the streets of London seeking news of the missing fiance, Mark Ingestrie. She is befriended by Colonel Jeffrey, who is searching for his lost friend, Thornhill, last seen in Sweeney Todd's Fleet Street barber-shop. Todd's apprentice, Tobias Ragg, is struggling to break free from his terrifying and sadistic master, while the barber himself is frantically trying to sell a string of pearls. Meanwhile, just around the corner in Bell Yard, the enigmatic Jarvis Williams has landed himself a fine job - making the most delicious pies in London, to Mrs Lovett's secret recipe...

Originally published as a weekly serial in 1846-7, this chilling tale is available for the first time in book form.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I thought this was a great addition to any Sweeney Todd story. It had just the right amount of creepy.

The Eagle in Splendour:Napoleon I and His Court-Philip Mansel

Discover the man behind the legend in this first book in English to take a look inside the court of Napoleon

Napoleon’s military conquests changed the world and dominate most portraits of him, but it was through the splendour of his court - more extravagent even than that of the Sun King - that Napoleon governed his empire. His palaces at Saint-Cloud and the Tuileries were the centres of his power, the dazzling reflection of the greatest empire in modern European history.

Using the unpublished papers of the Emperor’s leading courtiers, and his second Empress Marie Louise, Philip Mansel brings to life the intoxicated world and sheds light on the man behind the legend; the mistresses; the hierarchy and class structure he craved; his relationship with his family; his rude behaviour to ambassadors; his insecurities. Mansel illuminates the nature of a personality that conquered half the world yet, in the end, was “devoured by ambition”, abandoned by his courtiers, leaving behind him a country smaller and weaker than he found it.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I really liked this book. Historically it is very interesting and shows an insight into Napoleon that I had never heard. This is a perfect book for any history lover.

Smart, But Dead-Nancy G. West

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I quite liked this book. I haven't read any of the others in the series but that didn't hurt anything. The characters are all very engaging and the story was great. I can't wait to read more from this author.

Book Clubbed-Lorna Barrett

Book Clubbed (A Booktown Mystery, #8)

New York Times bestselling author Lorna Barrett is back in town—Booktown, that is—with another page-turning mystery. This time bookstore owner Tricia Miles and her sister, Angelica, put their own problems on the shelf to catch a killer who turns a bookcase into a murder weapon…

Cranky Chamber of Commerce receptionist Betsy Dittmeyer is done reading people the riot act. After she’s crushed by a fallen bookcase, the next item to be read is her last will and testament—which is packed with surprises. It soon comes to light that Betsy was hiding volumes of dark secrets behind that perpetual frown of hers—and one of them just might have been a motive for murder.

While Tricia tries to help Angelica—the newly elected Chamber of Commerce president and Betsy’s boss—solve the mystery, she discovers a hidden chapter in her own family history that rocks her to her very core. And with her ex-husband and the chief of police vying for her affections, it’s doubly hard to focus on who might have buried Betsy in a tomb of tomes.

But as Tricia and Angelica try to read between the lines, they need to watch their step…and make sure the killer doesn’t catch them between the stacks.

This series is so much fun. I love Tricia and all of the other characters. Yet again, Tricia is pulled into another murder mystery and this time I didn't have a clue who was the killer until the end. I can't wait to see what happens next time.

As usual, the author has knocked this out of the park. This is a great addition to the series. I can't believe I have read 20 books in this series already. They have all been great and this one was no different. Suzanne is a wonderful character as is everyone else in the series and the story was great. The ending was a little hard to take and once you read the story you will understand why. Great book and great recipes to boot.

The Georgian Menagerie-Christopher Plumb

The Georgian Menagerie

In the eighteenth century, it would not have been impossible to encounter an elephant or a kangaroo making its way down the Strand, heading towards the menagerie of Mr. Pidcock at the Exeter Change. Pidcock s was just one of a number of commercial menagerists who plied their trade in London in this period the predecessors to the zoological societies of the Victorian era. As the British Empire expanded and seaborne trade flooded into London s ports, the menagerists gained access to animals from the most far-flung corners of the globe, and these strange creatures became the objects of fascination and wonder. Many aristocratic families sought to create their own private menageries with which to entertain their guests, while for the less well-heeled, touring exhibitions of exotic creatures both alive and dead satisfied their curiosity for the animal world. While many exotic creatures were treasured as a form of spectacle, others fared less well turtles went into soups and civet cats were sought after for ingredients for perfume. In this entertaining and enlightening book, Plumb introduces the many tales of exotic animals in London.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I have to say that I am torn about this book. While I love historic books, the history of this book is very hard to stomach. It is very well written, but the subject matter is quite cruel. I think this would be a wonderful book for someone that likes this type of history but I don't think that it was for me.

Cover Shot(A Headline in High Heels Mystery #5)-LynDee Walker

Cover Shot (A Headlines in High Heels Mystery #5)

With too much to lose, a shot at the story of a lifetime, and a missing bullet that might be the key to the whole thing, landing this headline could save the day in more ways than one. But can Nichelle dig up the truth before the killer buries her with it?

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I am hesitant to start reading a book that is so far down in a series without having read the others. I had no reason to worry. This book is great. The characters are a lot of fun and the story was great. Now I just need to read the first 4 before the next one comes out.

Panther Prowling-Yasmine Galenorn

Panther Prowling (Otherworld/Sisters of the Moon, #17)

We’re the D’Artigo sisters: savvy half-human, half-Fae operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. My sister Camille is a wicked-good witch with three gorgeous husbands. Menolly is a vampire married to a werepuma. And me? I’m Delilah, a two-faced werecat and a Death Maiden. While the war in Otherworld is expanding, so is my newly renamed PI business. And my next case is about to make life very interesting…

During the grand reopening for the Wayfarer, he shows up while being chased by a rampaging ghost. Daniel has procured a rare and valuable sword, and a ring of ghostly warriors comes attached to it. Protectors of the soul trapped within it, the spirits are out to stop anybody who threatens the weapon. As my sisters and I unravel the history of the sword, we quickly realize that the entity locked within the blade is a dangerous king from times gone by—and he’s about to break free and try to recover his crown.

Yasmine Galenorn has done it again. This book was AMAZING!! Once I started I didn't put it down. I love this series and am not looking forward to its ending. It is so well written that I never want the story to end. This book is a great addition to the series. All of the characters are great and the story is great. Run, run, run and pick this one up.

Diner Knock Out-Terri Austin

Hunting down clues that lead too close to home, Rose finds herself in the fight of her life. Can she beat the killer to the punch before she gets knocked out for good?

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book by Terri Austin that I have read. I'm always a little leery to start reading a book that is not the first book in the series before the others. I had no reason to worry with this one. This book was wonderful. Rose is a wonderful main character. She is just the right amount of spunk. The story was great and I can't wait to read the rest of this series.

An Unexpected Wish-Eileen Richards

An Unexpected Wish (A Lady's Wish, #1)

Sometimes a last resort is pure magic…

Anne Townsend doesn’t ask for much. Plain and poor, she’d settle for the funds to put food on the table. Making a wish on the fabled Fairy Steps is hardly a solid solution, but to see her two sisters taken care of, Anne’s willing to try anything. Yet when she finds herself suddenly surrounded with suitors, romance is now a possibility for the spinster everyone always ignored except with the one man who will never want her…

Nathaniel Matthews has no time for courting. As the eldest, he has his family’s lost fortune to rebuild, and his reckless brother to manage before he gambles his future away. Odd that Nathaniel can think of little but kissing bright-eyed Anne, who seems to be fighting off admirers from all sides. Is it the country air, or is Nathaniel ready to discover that love has a magic all its own?

I received this book in exchange for an honest review from Net Galley. I really enjoyed this book. It was very well written and the characters were wonderful. This is the first book by Eileen Richards that I have read and I cannot wait for more.

But the truth can prove to be as shocking as any lie, and as Lauren exposes each one, from her family, from her friends, she isn’t the only one who will face heart-stopping repercussions.

I'm sorry to say that I didn't care for this book. It started off very slow and just didn't catch my attention.

Dead Ice:Anite Blake, Vampire Hunter #24-Laurell K. Hamilton

Dead Ice (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #24)

Anita Blake has the highest kill count of any vampire executioner in the country. She’s a U.S. Marshal who can raise zombies with the best of them. But ever since she and master vampire Jean-Claude went public with their engagement, all she is to anyone and everyone is Jean-Claude’s fiancée.

It’s wreaking havoc with her reputation as a hard ass—to some extent. Luckily, in professional circles, she’s still the go-to expert for zombie issues. And right now, the FBI is having one hell of a zombie issue.

Someone is producing zombie porn. Anita has seen her share of freaky undead fetishes, so this shouldn’t bother her. But the women being victimized aren’t just mindless, rotting corpses. Their souls are trapped behind their eyes, signaling voodoo of the blackest kind.

It’s the sort of case that can leave a mark on a person. And Anita’s own soul may not survive unscathed .

Once again, Laurell K. Hamilton, has written a can't put down book. Anita Blake books are, always, fantastic. This one was by far one of my favorites. Anita has her hands full with a very worthy adversary and the end will blow your mind. Be prepared to beg Laurell for another book as quickly as possible.

Vexed by a Viscount:Alls Fair In Love #4-Erin Knightley

Vexed by a Viscount (All's Fair in Love, #4)

Prudence Landon has always done exactly as she should. She’s obeyed her parents’ every word, lived by society’s every dictate, and even agreed to marry a man more than twice her age simply because it was expected of her. In the fortnight before her wedding, she decides it’s high time to bend a few rules before life as she knows it is over.

Viscount Ashby leads a charmed life. Betrothed since the age of seven, he is perfectly content to allow his off-the-market status to keep the marriage-minded mamas at bay. When he returns home to his parent’s estate and finds their prim, straight-laced young neighbor swimming naked in broad daylight, he’s both amused and intrigued.

When Ash discovers Prudence’s upcoming nuptials to the aging squire, he decides to help her live a little before the parson’s mousetrap springs closed. But what started as good fun soon leads to something much more. With her wedding fast approaching, they must choose between breaking all the rules and losing their one chance for happiness.

This is a perfect, quick little novella. I love Erin Knightley books and this does not disappoint. It has the perfect amount of romance in a tiny package.

The Reluctant Duchess-Sharon Cullen

The Reluctant Duchess

Perfect for fans of Mary Balogh and Eloisa James, Sharon Cullen’s seductive new historical romance ignites as a shy country girl and a hotheaded duke surrender to dangerous temptations.

Lady Sara Emerson was jolted out of her dull provincial life by her cousin’s murder. Now that the killer seems to be targeting her, Sara seeks help from the man who was once her cousin’s fiancé, Gabriel Ferguson, Duke of Rossmoyne. With his towering frame and fiery personality, Ross cuts an intimidating figure. Living under his protection, however, has its own hazards—like the sudden urge Sara feels to take their relationship in new, exquisitely inappropriate directions.

Dazzled by the social graces of his betrothed, Ross never noticed her shy, blushing cousin. Looking at Sara now, though, he’s drawn to her lovely eyes and calm disposition. Funny how a year away from the hustle and bustle of the tonchanges a man. But Ross has no intention of allowing a woman to interfere with his plan to return overseas. He will simply capture the murderer and set sail once again. The problem is, with her beguiling lips and heavenly touch, Sara makes him never want to leave home—or his bed—again.

I love historical romance. This book is a perfect example of why I love it so much. The setting is fantastic and the characters are enchanting. Sharon Cullen has a wonderful way of making them all endearing. Also, the romance is just steamy enough.

Murder at Redwood Cove-Janet Finsilver

Murder at Redwood Cove

Bed, breakfast…and a body!

If it weren’t for the fact that she’s replacing a dead man, Kelly Jackson would love her new job managing the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast on the coast of Northern California. But Bob Phillips did plunge off the cliff to his death…and Kelly’s starting to think it may not have been an accident. Bob’s retired friends—The “Silver Sentinels”—are also on the case, especially when Kelly is attacked…and another body turns up. Kelly has her hands full with overseeing the B&B’s annual Taste of Chocolate and Wine Festival, but she’s also closing in on the killer…who’s ready to send Kelly on her own permanent vacation…

I received an advance copy of this book for an honest review. Wow, wow, wow!! This is one of the best first books, hands down, that I have ever read. I am hooked. The characters were wonderful. The story was amazing. I hope that this turns into a very long series, because it is just that good.

Washington and Hamilton:The Alliance That Forged America-Tony Williams, Stephen Knott

Washington and Hamilton: The Alliance That Forged America

I received an advanced copy of this book for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book. It seems to be extremely well researched and the story is fascinating. This is a must have for history lovers.

If Onions Could Sping Leaks:A Country Cooking School Mystery-Paige Shelton

If Onions Could Spring Leeks

The New York Times bestselling author of If Catfish Had Nine Lives returns to Broken Rope, Missouri, where ghosts of the Old West seek assistance from country cooks and amateur sleuths Betts Winston and her grandmother.

With summer tourists flocking to Broken Rope, locals volunteer to keep chaos to a minimum. Old West skits are running smoothly, actors are behaving, and stagecoach rides are more popular than ever, but when a spectral visitor appears by ghost train, it’s a job only Betts and Gram can handle.

Gram soon starts having nightmares about their ghostly visitor’s demise.  And if a ghost and the hot summer weather weren’t making things sticky enough, one of the town’s volunteers—a man notorious for having more than his fair share of ex-wives—is murdered. When Jerome, Bett’s otherworldly friend, makes an unsettling appearance, this simmering double mystery becomes a recipe for disaster.

This series just keeps getting better and better. Paige Shelton does a remarkable job of getting the reader to want to be a part of her stories. The characters in this series are second to none and the stories are always fantastic. I can't wait to see what happens next.

The winemaker detective and his assistant Virgile want to know more, and their investigation leads them from the the sands of Djibouti to the vineyards of Côte du Rhône.

I was, seriously, spoiled by NetGalley this weekend. I was given so many awesome books to read and review that were just fantastic. This is one of those books. I sat down, after finishing another great book, started this one and didn't stop until I was finished. The main character is wonderful and endearing. I felt like I need to have a bottle of wine with them. A great story and an even better mystery. Thank you.

But what the Blackheart of Ben More never could have imagined is that Farah has terms of her own, igniting a tempestuous desire that consumes them both. Could it be that the woman he captured is the only one who can touch the black heart he’d long thought dead?

I really enjoyed this book. So much so that I sat down to read and didn't stop until it was finished. I can't wait to see what happens next in this series.

She can take care of herself and hasn't yet met a man who could impress her . . . especially not Donell MacDonnell, the odious older man she was promised to five years ago. The man she swore she would spurn forever now invades her thoughts, her dreams, and her heart.

An Unexpected Desire

Yet after sharing one kiss with Lady Gillian, the powerful Highlander becomes the one seduced and captivated. Now giving in to temptation could ruin them both.

I love historical romances. This is the PERFECT example of why I love them so much. These two were made for each other. There passion in palpable. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

You're The Earl That I Want-Kellly Bowen

You're the Earl That I Want (The Lords of Worth, #3)

THE EARL DOTH PROTEST . . .

For businessman Heath Hextall, inheriting an earldom has been a damnable nuisance. The answer: find a well-bred, biddable woman to keep his life in order and observe the required social niceties. But it's always been clear that Lady Josephine Somerhall is not that woman. Once a shy slip of a girl, Joss is now brilliant, beautiful chaos in a ball gown.

. . . BUT THE LADY KNOWS BEST

In her heart, Joss has always loved Heath, the one person she's always been able to count on. That doesn't mean she wants to marry him though. Without a husband, Joss can do as she pleases—and now, it pleases her to solve the mystery of an encoded file given to Heath by a dying man. It's put Heath in peril once, and Joss won't let that happen again. She'll do what she must to ensure the earl's safety. And to remind him that what she lacks in convention, she makes up for in passion.

This is a very good historical romance. I loved the era and the characters were great. What a passionate duo.

With support from her pole-dancing best friend, her always-on-call family, and the loves of her life (her two kids — and possibly Dean), Nicki must uncover the groom’s demons while conquering her own.

I love this series. Even though this is just the second book, I feel like I am hooked for the long hall. It is so well written and the characters are so much fun that I just can't get enough.
