Billy Joel-Fred Schruers

Billy Joel
In Billy Joel, acclaimed music journalist Fred Schruers draws upon more than one hundred hours of exclusive interviews with Joel to present an unprecedented look at the life, career, and legacy of the pint-sized kid from Long Island who became a rock icon.

Exhibiting unparalleled intimate knowledge, Schruers chronicles Joel’s rise to the top of the charts, from his working-class origins in Levittown and early days spent in boxing rings and sweaty clubs to his monumental success in the seventies and eighties. He also explores Joel’s creative transformation in the nineties, his dream performance with Paul McCartney at Shea Stadium in 2008, and beyond.

Along the way, Schruers reveals the stories behind all the key events and relationships—including Joel’s high-profile marriages and legal battles—that defined his path to stardom and inspired his signature songs, such as “Piano Man,” “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant,” “New York State of Mind,” and “She’s Always a Woman.” Throughout, he captures the spirit of a restless artist determined to break through by sharing, in his deeply personal lyrics, the dreams and heartbreaks of suburban American life.

Comprehensive, vibrantly written, and filled with Joel’s memories and reflections—as well as those of the family, friends, and band members who have formed his inner circle, including Christie Brinkley, Alexa Ray Joel, Jon Small, and Steve Cohen—this is the definitive account of a beloved rock star’s epic American journey.

I loved this book. I learned so many things about Billy Joel that I had never heard before. What a great story and amazing life.

To Die Fur-Dixie Lyle

To Die Fur (Whiskey, Tango & Foxtrot Mystery, #2)
Deirdre has her hands full, as usual. Working as as a Jill-of-all-trades for a zany billionaire like Zelda Zoransky means the daily grind is closer to a juggling act, and this week is no exception—especially when her side job is directing spiritual traffic in Zelda’s pet cemetery. With ZZ hosting a party for some of the world’s wealthiest animal collectors and a rare albino liger named Augustus in residence at the private zoo, Foxtrot is ready for trouble to take a big bite out of her schedule…

TO DIE FUR

She doesn’t have to wait long. The half-ton big cat is dead, and there’s a houseful of colorful suspects, each one wackier than the next. But if they were all bidding to buy him, who would want Augustus dead? With the help of Tango’s feline telepathy and Whiskey the canine shapeshifter, Foxtrot learns that there’s much more to Augustus than meets the eye. Now they just have to sniff out a killer before any more fur flies…

Foxtrot has her hands full once again. This is a great second book in this series. The animals are hilarious and the mystery is fantastic. I can't wait for the next book.

Ennara and the Book of Shadows-Angela Myron

Ennara and the Book of Shadows (Ennara, #2)

When strange accidents start happening around thirteen year-old necromancer Ennara and her friends, she must search for the mysterious stolen artifacts causing the attacks while learning the highest form of magic--the spells that could prevent the fruition of a terrible prophecy.

I cannot get enough of this series. The first book was amazing and this one is just as wonderful. Keep it up.

Wit and Wisdom of America's First Ladies-Josyln Pine

Wit and Wisdom of America's First Ladies: A Book of Quotations

"The one thing I do not want," quipped Jacqueline Kennedy, "is to be called First Lady. It sounds like a saddle horse." This lively collection includes more than 350 revealing and thought-provoking remarks by White House wives, from Martha Washington ("I live a very dull life here, and know nothing that passes in town.") to Michelle Obama ("The only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.").
Humorous and heartfelt reflections include Abigail Adams's thoughts on partnership ("No man ever prospered in the world without the consent and cooperation of his wife."); Dolley Madison's attitude toward gossip ("It is one of my sources of happiness never to desire a knowledge of other people's business."); and Eleanor Roosevelt's comment on accountability ("It is often the people who refuse to assume any responsibility who are apt to be the sharpest critics of those who do.").

This was an interesting read. There were a lot of quotes that I had never heard but some first ladies where just down right boring. All and all a good book.

Ennara and the Fallen Druid-Angela Myron

Ennara and the Fallen Druid (Ennara, #1)
When a mysterious curse threatens to transform everyone into shadowy demons, a magical eleven year-old girl must travel to a sunken city ruin—fighting pirates, monsters, and an undead sorcerer along the way—to find a weapon that can save her world.

I don't know what else to say about this book except that I LOVED IT. This is a fantastic children's book. I cannot wait to read more.

The Sweet Surrender of Janet Buchanan-Paula Quinn

The Sweet Surrender of Janet Buchanan (The MacGregors: Highland Heirs, #1.5)
Janet Buchanan is no man's property. She refuses to marry her family's sworn enemy-consequences be damned. She'd rather take a dagger to the brute herself. Yet when a tantalizing-and infuriating-man from her past comes to her rescue, Janet finds herself undeniably tempted by his hot, hungry kiss.

HE COULD NOT BE TAMED . . .

Notorious for his prowess as a lover and a fighter, Darach Grant has only one goal in mind: to defend his kin's land from the impending siege of a hostile clan. The last thing he needs is the delicious distraction of Janet Buchanan-the only woman who can stir his ire as deeply as she warms his blood. But Janet's intended will stop at nothing to claim her, forcing Darach to choose between surrendering his honor . . . or his heart.

This was a great little novella. I was able to read through it very quickly. Surprisingly, I found that even with this being a novella that I was pulled right into the story and it did not lack for anything. I look forward to reading more from Paula Quinn.

"Murder, dirty politics, pirate lore, and a hot police detective: Guidebook to Murder has it all! A cozy lover’s dream come true." --Susan McBride, author of The Debutante Dropout Mysteries.

This was a great little read. The characters in the series are all wonderful. As always, I loved the mystery and was on pins and needles until the very end. I can't wait for the next book.

Lives of Kings-Lucy Leiderman

Lives of Kings
After discovering that she had a past life full of magic in Britannia thousands of years ago, Gwen must race against time to stop three ancient magicians who threaten to tear the world apart.

Having won a battle to save her own magic from being enslaved in Lives of Magic, Gwen is still reeling from memories of her past life and challenges her present one. Alone without the one she trusted most, she gathers her friends to search for others like her — those that can destroy the magicians once and for all.

But will the lure of infinite power be too much to resist, even for those sworn to protect?

As Gwen's group begins to fracture amidst division and millennia-old rivalry, reality starts to blur with the past until the lines between family, friend and enemy are no longer clear. Gwen needs to find the key to defeating the magicians before they recover their power — or else surrender to her past life’s magic and lose herself forever.

This is a great series. I love all of the magic incorporated in this book. What a great ride.

Moonlight Raider-Amanda Scott

Moonlight Raider (Border Nights, #1)
In a flawless blend of history and romance, USA Today bestselling author Amanda Scott transports readers again to the Scottish Borders in her brand new BORDER NIGHTS series.

I love historical romance and especially love anything in Scotland. This was a great read. I loved the characters and the storyline. I wish more romances where like this one. Thanks for a wonderful read.

Not The Killing Type-Lorna Barrett

Not the Killing Type (A Booktown Mystery, #7)
It’s November in Stoneham, New Hampshire, and that means it’s time for the Chamber of Commerce elections. The race is already a bit heated, as the long-standing Chamber president is being challenged by a former lover—Tricia’s own sister, Angelica. Then local small business owner Stan Berry throws his hat in the ring.

Unfortunately, it’s not there for long when he’s found murdered in the Brookview Inn. The murder weapon is a brass letter opener belonging to the inn’s receptionist. Tricia knows there’s no way the receptionist is a killer. And when Angelica asks Tricia to help clear her name and win the election, she sees little choice except to start snooping.

She soon uncovers a ballot box full of lies and betrayals, and a chamber full of people who had grudges against the victim. But were they serious enough to lead to murder? And who truly had something to gain? Tricia will have to do some serious sleuthing before she pulls the lever on a killer.

I loved this series. I have yet to be disappointed in any of the books and this one is not different. The characters are fantastic and Ms. Barrett has a wonderful way of keeping the killer a mystery to the very end. Wonderful read. Keep it up.

The Kidnapped Bride(Redcakes #4)-Heather Hiestand

The Kidnapped Bride (Redcakes, #4)
Lady Elizabeth Shield is used to saving herself from trouble. And even if dashing private inquiry agent Dougal Alexander just rescued her from white slavers, she’s definitely not returning to her stifling aristocratic life and unsuitable suitors. Not when there are other women in danger—and a secret promise to keep in Edinburgh. But outwitting Dougal’s tactics to return her to London and her family will be easier than staying away from his intoxicating kisses…

He’s a baron’s second son accustomed to making his own way and uncovering the truth. Now Dougal must keep Lady Elizabeth close for her own protection, but her spirited wiles are proving scandalously irresistible. His most difficult case yet will be showing her that he’s everything she truly desires—and that love is the greatest of adventures…

“Before I realized it, the unusually strong and well-developed characters of The Kidnapped Bride had sneaked up on me and captured my full attention. This is one of the best shorter books I have ever read.” --Delle Jacobs, author of Lady Wicked

I love historical romances and this book did not let me down. The characters were wonderful and the romance was fantastic. I can't wait to read more in this series.

Mrs. Kaplan and the Matzoh Ball of Death-Mark Reutlinger

Mrs. Kaplan and the Matzoh Ball of Death
Everyone knows that Rose Kaplan makes the best matzoh ball soup around—she’s a regular matzoh ball maven—so it’s no surprise at the Julius and Rebecca Cohen Home for Jewish Seniors when, once again, Mrs. K wins the honor of preparing the beloved dish for the Home’s seder on the first night of Passover.

But when Bertha Finkelstein is discovered facedown in her bowl of soup, her death puts a bit of a pall on the rest of the seder. And things go really meshugge when it comes out that Bertha choked on a diamond earring earlier stolen from resident Daisy Goldfarb. Suddenly Mrs. K is the prime suspect in the police investigation of both theft and murder. Oy vey—it’s a recipe for disaster, unless Rose and her dear friend Ida can summon up the chutzpah to face down the police and solve the mystery themselves.

I really wanted to like this book. But, I had a very hard time getting into it. It didn't feel like the kind of mystery that I enjoy. Sorry, just not for me.

If you like scary books as I do, this is a great choice of books to read. While sometimes hard to connect the tales are none the less quite frightening. I enjoyed this immensely.

What a Duke Dares-Anna Campbell

What a Duke Dares (Sons of Sin, #3)
What woman in her right mind would say no to marrying the dashing Duke of Sedgemoor? Miss Penelope Thorne, that's who. She's known Camden Rothermere since they were children-and she also knows she'd bring nothing but scandal to his name.

Cam can hardly believe Penelope turned down his proposal. But if she wants to run off to the Continent and set the rumor mill ablaze, he can't stop her. Then her brother's dying request sends him to bring home the one woman he thought he'd finally gotten over.

The only way they'll both get back to London without their reputations in tatters is to pretend they're married during the journey. That means kissing like they mean it and even sharing a bed-until it becomes hard to tell where the game ends and true desire begins .

This is the second of Ms. Campbell's books that I have a read and I am not disappointed. I loved the romance of this book and the wonderful gift of second chances. Great job.

Death by Devil's Breath-Kylie Logan

Death by Devil's Breath
In Las Vegas, the stakes are high—and so is the Scoville scale. Maxie Pierce and the Chili Showdown are in town for a very heated contest devoted to judging the legendary and notorious-for-being-self-combustible Devil’s Breath chili. The guest judges are casino performers with a taste for chili and an eye for publicity.

Maxie is already going mad organizing the event, dealing with her snide half sister, Sylvia, and trying to figure out her hothead of security, Nick. But when a local hack comedian drops dead in the middle of the Showdown, it isn’t the spicy dish—it’s poison. And Maxie is going to have to shuffle through a full deck of suspects to pick out the culprit.

INCLUDES DELICIOUS RECIPES!

This was a wonderful read. It had a little trouble in the beginning getting into it but shortly after that I was sucked right in until the end. Ms. Logan does a wonderful job with the mysteries in her books. This one had me guessing until the very end.

If Catfish Had Nine Lives-Paige Shelton

If Catfish Had Nine Lives (Country Cooking School Mystery)
Betts Winston has inherited more than her cooking skills from her grandmother—she can also see and talk to ghosts of people that once roamed the streets of Broken Rope, Missouri, in the days of the Old West…

With Gram’s Country Cooking School on spring break, Betts and Gram are taking part in this year’s cowboy poetry convention, offering lessons on frying catfish over an open campfire. But when a staged gunfight ends in real death and her brother Teddy becomes a prime suspect, Betts may be the one to jump from the frying pan into the fire.

After her ghostly guardian Jerome appears to watch her back and a spectral Pony Express rider gallops into town with some unfinished business, Broken Rope starts to seem more like a cowboy ghost convention. With trouble on both sides of this mortal coil, it’s up to Betts to clear her brother, put the spirits to rest, and make sure the true killer doesn’t become the one who got away.

I LOVE this series. Paige does such an amazing job of bring the reader into her stories. I love that about all of her books. This one does not disappoint. All of my favorite characters are back and the mystery is wonderful Thanks, Paige. Keep it up.

Well Read Then Dead-Terrie Farley Moran

Well Read, Then DeadNestled in the barrier islands of Florida’s Gulf Coast, Fort Myers Beach is home to Mary “Sassy” Cabot and Bridget Mayfield—owners of the bookstore cafĂ©, Read ’Em and Eat. But when they’re not dishing about books or serving up scones, Sassy and Bridgy are keeping tabs on hard-boiled murder.

Read ’Em and Eat is known for its delicious breakfast and lunch treats, along with quite a colorful clientele. If it’s not Rowena Gustavson loudly debating the merits of the current book club selection, it’s Miss Augusta Maddox lecturing tourists on rumors of sunken treasure among the islands. It’s no wonder Sassy’s favorite is Delia Batson, a regular at the Emily Dickinson table. Augusta’s cousin and best friend Delia is painfully shy—which makes the news of her murder all the more shocking.

No one is more distraught than Augusta, and Sassy wants to help any way she can. But Augusta doesn’t have time for sympathy. She wants Delia’s killer found—and she’s not taking no for an answer. Now Sassy is on the case, and she’d better act fast before there’s any more trouble in paradise.

This was a great start to a new series. I really loved this book. The characters are warm, funny and make the story that much more fantastic. Great job. I look forward to the next book.

Maple Mayhem-Jessie Crockett

Maple MayhemIn Sugar Grove, New Hampshire, people are serious about their maple syrup—especially Dani Greene, whose family owns the Greener Pastures sugarhouse.  But when murder disrupts the small-town sweetness, Dani pores over clues to draw out a killer...

Despite being a fourth-generation syrup maker, Dani isn’t stuck in the past. She’s starting a new agricultural cooperative that reduces costs for every syrup producer who joins. Everyone considers it a sweet deal except the die-hard curmudgeon Frank Lemieux—and when a saboteur starts targeting supporters, everyone suspects Frank.

But it turns out they’re barking up the wrong tree when Dani finds Frank murdered in his own sugarhouse. As the sabotage continues, she realizes that Frank was framed. With the help of her family, and a handsome official from the Fish and Game Department, Dani must catch the killer before another syrup maker kicks the bucket.

While I enjoyed this book, I found that it took far to long to get to the main crime. Other than that I have no complaints and look forward to the next book in this series.
